The
Lure
The Eisenhower and Babe Didrikson courses at Industry Hills are
so difficult that not even the PGA tour will play them. Long
sycamore-lined fairways, tight doglegs, and sloping, rock-hard
greens make them the most challenging public courses in Southern
California.
The Goods
William F. Bell unleashed these par-72 beasts in 1979, complete
with eight lake-sized water hazards and 160 sand traps (most are
around Babe's 12th hole). Come early--sun and smog roll in well
before the six hours that it might take to play Ike are over.
Don't miss St. Andrew's Station, a Victorian pavilion that is
home to Winston Churchill's burial car and a funicular railroad
that shuttles carts between the courses. Other amenities include
PGA instruction, three putting greens, and a two-story driving
range.
The Regulars
Serious golfers of all ages, from the discriminating businessman
lured by $2,000 corporate memberships, to LPGA hopefuls, to
eight-year-old prodigies. |

The
Draw
The name should be the first tip that this hilly, par-71 public
course is a challenge. Designer Richard Bigler embraced the
natural geography, resulting in some outrageous
doglegs--specifically the par-5 13th hole and the 410-yard,
par-4 3rd hole. The one you'll talk about for weeks? The 12th
hole--a 490-yard, par-5 where you must navigate the tight,
uphill fairway between an embankment and a lake to reach the
further elevated, two-tiered green--it's so steep that the hole
is marked with a double-length pin in order to be seen on
approach. Win or lose, you'll be knocked out by the beautiful
views in the middle of the back nine.
The Regulars
While you're likely to encounter lots of khaki-clad O.C. sons
and dads bonding over a round, this difficult course's
reputation draws many more serious duffers (and scares away most
of the dawdling newbies). |

American
Beauty
With over 100 varieties of rose bushes planted around the
stadium, any other name just wouldn't be as sweet. The Rose Bowl
is home for UCLA football and L.A. Galaxy "futbol,"
not to mention the world's largest flea market on the second
Sunday of every month. Over the years, the Rose Bowl has also
hosted the World Cup final, five Super Bowls, Bob Dylan, and
Brandi Chastain's sports bra. And of course, every January it's
home to the only college bowl game that hasn't gone completely
corporate, Insight.com Bowl.
Sun Flare
Proof that every rose has its thorn: To pack over 90,000 in the
stands, the legroom in the bleachers is pretty slim. For an
afternoon event, stick to sections 14 through 23, and you'll
come out, well, smelling like a rose--that is, without the sun
blinding you. |
